The AD-WT-398 Network LAN Cable Tester and Wire Tracker is a professional-grade diagnostic tool designed for technicians and DIY enthusiasts. It simplifies the process of identifying, tracing, and testing cables in complex networking environments.
Below is a breakdown of its core functions and technical capabilities.
# Core Functionality
The kit typically consists of two main components: a Signal Transmitter and a Receiver Probe.
-
Wire Tracking (Toning): It emits a unique digital or analog tone onto a wire. Using the receiver probe, you can “sniff” out the correct cable from a cluttered bundle or behind a wall without stripping the insulation.
-
Cable Mapping (Pair Testing): By connecting both ends of an RJ45 (Ethernet) or RJ11 (Phone) cable to the device, it checks for physical wire mapping. It identifies:
-
Short Circuits: When two wires touch.
-
Open Circuits: Broken wires.
-
Crossed Pairs: Wires connected to the wrong pins.
-
-
Telephone Line Status: It can detect the state of a working phone line (Idle, Ringing, or Off-hook) and verify polarity.
Key Features
| Feature | Description |
| Dual Interface | Built-in ports for both RJ45 (8P8C) and RJ11 (6P2C/6P4C) connectors. |
| Signal Sensitivity | Adjustable volume control on the receiver to fine-tune tracking in noisy environments. |
| LED Indicators | A sequence of 1-8 LEDs (and a Ground LED) to visualize the continuity of each individual wire. |
| Flashlight/Torche | Integrated LED on the receiver probe for working in dark server closets or ceilings. |
## How to Use the AD-WT-398
1. Tracing a Cable
-
Plug one end of the cable into the Transmitter’s RJ45 or RJ11 jack.
-
Switch the transmitter to “SCAN” mode.
-
Use the Receiver probe to move along the cables. The signal will get louder as you approach the correct wire.
2. Testing Cable Integrity (Wiremap)
-
Plug one end of the cable into the Transmitter and the other into the Receiver.
-
Switch the transmitter to “TEST” mode.
-
Observe the LED sequence. If the cable is good, the lights will flash in a 1-to-1 sequence (1-1, 2-2, 3-3, etc.). If a light is skipped or out of order, the cable is faulty.
